So I finally finished Laura’s birthday present. I’m only a few months late (her birthday is a bit after Halloween). But better late than never? … Right?

Anyhow, I made her a min-book called Things We Love: “Inspired by Kate Spade’s book of the same title, these pages are filled with things we love. While Kate’s book is a tribute to style and fashion, this one is a tribute to us. Happy birthday.”

Language barrier

  • Me: Laura made me the best birthday cake. It's double chocolate with coconut frosting.
  • Him: I love coconut!
  • Me: Good, because this cake is enormous. I'm sending some home with you. Oh, and it has pecans in it.
  • Him: WHAT? WHAT ARE PECANS?
  • Me: ... why are you freaking out?
  • Him: It's pronounced "PEE-CANS." Not "PIKANS."
  • Me: Are you KIDDING? Who says pee-cans?!
  • Him: EVERYONE!
  • Me: Sigh. This is going to be a thing now, isn't it?

I meant to put these up a while ago. These are some photos from Laura’s birthday, back at the beginning of the month.

I only recently started baking, something I thought I’d never master, and I really wanted to make my BFF a cake from scratch for her 23rd birthday. Let me tell you, it was NOT EASY. Do you see the first photo in this set? Do you notice how there is cake batter all over the stove? I had some technical difficulties and I managed to get batter all over Cora’s kitchen and myself. Including the back of my sweater. Oye. Don’t ask.

But all in all, things turned out pretty good. I had trouble committing to a cake recipe, but I settled on a chocolate chip lemon cake. With butter-cream milk chocolate frosting and rainbow sprinkles.

Though the cake ended up being delicious, I think the next time I make a cake entirely from scratch I’ll pick a simpler recipe for the sake of Cora’s kitchen.

wish list

My birthday isn’t until August 1st and I’m not really expecting my parents to splurge on anything, but still … it’s fun to put together a wish list.

1. A new point-and-shoot camera

2. Kindle

Listen, I’m a big believer in real books, in spilling coffee on a Hemingway, in keeping my torn and yellowed copy of The Great Gatsby from high school, in buying used books because they have character. But, and this is important, I’m also poor and the Kindle is so much more efficient. I could download books for a fraction of the cost. And I could pick a book for whatever mood I’m in. And I’d no longer have to lug 4 books with me across oceans on vacation (like I did this time).

3. A new laptop bag.

Because the one I have sucks. And I refuse to continue to carry my lovely new laptop in a giant purse.

4. World peace.

I mean, this should really be on everyone’s wish list all the time. Come on, now.

5. To find a nice, cheap apartment in a good area near SCAD, with off street parking and a porch. And a dishwasher.

6. For Laura to move to Savannah with me.
